She didn't know how long she'd been asleep. Had she been asleep?

Fox opened one eye, and a rush of nausea curdled in her belly. She opened the other eye, and soon enough she was heaving up the nothing of her empty stomach. It tasted of bile.

She tried to gain some sense of her surroundings. There was water to the northeast, and there was water to the southwest. Back as far as she could see to the northwest was a narrow strip of land. The southeast was the only interesting direction. It appeared to be a much larger body of land. Mountains, and maybe even some trees below them.

Peregrine was nowhere to be found but–oh wait. Fox felt a sharp pang in her heart. He's gone.

But what about—

Fox checked her belly, but nothing was there.

What the hell had happened?
